I spent Canada Day in Toronto this summer enjoying a picnic and conversation in Trinity Bellwoods Park with the members of FEAST Toronto; Deborah Wang (left), Dave Morgan (center) and Amber Landgraff (right).

FEAST Toronto describes their focus as “Funding Engaging Actions with Sustainable Tactics.” There are more opportunities in Canada than in the US for artists to receive funding but there is still a need for alternative funds sources to realize creative public and social work that falls outside the traditional art context.

In Brooklyn, FEAST takes place in the basement of the Church of the Messiah and is the work of a rotating crew of people who help make each event a success. After visiting with the organizers of Soup and FEAST events in cities in the US and Canada, it was great to finally experience one at FEAST Brooklyn’s 11th event.

I interviewed Daniel Tucker in his office in Chicago this summer. He creates publications and projects around the ideas of art, community, documentary and politics. Working on public interventionist art projects led him to create AREA to propose new ideas and preserve the memory of past projects.

BenPR is an interview series on people engaged in creative work with a public or social dimension. On this episode, I’ll be speaking with Abigail Satinsky, one of the co-founders of

InCUBATE and the program director of Three Walls, an artists run non-profit.

To start off this series, I spent a month on the road collecting interviews in Alabama, Chicago, Detroit and Toronto before ending up back in New York. I met people doing amazing things at PieLab, InCUBATE, Temporary Services, Broken City Lab and the Detroit Collaborative Design Center, among others. As this program continues, I will invite guest interviewers to share their conversations with people doing work they are excited about that shares this focus.

The first four episodes will be on the Sunday Soup network and how it operates in different cities. These will be followed with my conversation with Brett Bloom and Marc Fischer of Temporary Services, considering the timeliness of the upcoming Living as Form program by Creative Time which will feature their work.

InCUBATE is the Chicago based collective of arts administrators who created the first Sunday Soup and is dedicated to developing new models and approaches to arts administration and funding. They helped to pioneer and popularize the community fundraising model where money is raised through a meal for creative projects through a democratic process.
